Intercom and Entry System Product Guides

Compare video intercom, telephone entry, readers and credentials for apartment communities, offices and commercial buildings across North and South Carolina. Installed and supported by our own technicians from offices in Charlotte and Columbia.

Entry systems are judged from outside the door

Intercom and door entry systems simplify granting access to people visiting a secure facility. An intercom connected to a secure door lets a visitor speak to whoever is responsible for admitting them, and lets that person release the door without walking to it.

Audio-only systems offer a basic level of security. They ask an administrator to recognize a voice and assume the person outside is who they claim to be. That is often fine, and occasionally it is not. Adding video lets whoever answers assess the visitor before releasing the door, which is the main reason to pay for it.

Commercial intercom systems matter most where there is a steady flow of visitors but access still has to be controlled. Staff answer the call, verify the caller, and release the gate, door or barrier remotely. In practice, delivery drivers and contractors make up most of that traffic, so time-limited codes, delivery release and an audit trail are worth specifying rather than assuming.

Aiphone

Long-established audio and video entry, including systems that retrofit onto existing two-wire cabling.

2N

IP intercom and answering units that integrate cleanly with access control platforms.

Verkada intercom

Cloud-managed video intercom that shares administration with Verkada cameras and access.

Access control

Credentials, readers and platforms, since the entry door usually needs both.

Gate operators

Where the entry point is a vehicle gate rather than a pedestrian door.

Choosing intercom and entry: what actually changes the specification

Who answers the call

A staffed desk, a phone in every unit, or a mobile app. This single decision rules most products in or out before anything else is considered.

Audio only or video

Video lets whoever answers judge a visitor before releasing the door, which is the main reason to pay for it. Audio-only remains reasonable where a person is always present.

Wiring you already have

Some platforms run over existing two-wire or coax, others require Cat6 to every station. On an occupied building this is frequently the deciding cost.

Deliveries and contractors

Delivery drivers and contractors are most of the traffic in practice. Time-limited codes, delivery release and an audit trail should be specified rather than assumed.

Intercom and entry brands we install

Entry systems decide who gets through the door before it opens. These are the ranges we fit — the right one usually depends on whether a person answers, and from where.

Credentials and readers

How people identify themselves at the door changes the reader, the cost per opening and what happens when somebody leaves. Cards and fobs are familiar and cheap to issue but have to be collected back. Mobile credentials remove the reissue problem and are simple to revoke, but assume everyone carries a supported phone. Keypads and codes are the cheapest to deploy and the hardest to keep private.

ButterflyMX

ButterflyMX blends with access control to cover both visitor entry and resident access. The intercom lets a visitor request entry, and the door system releases the barrier remotely, so apartment communities, office buildings and educational facilities can manage entry without staffing the door.

DoorKing

DoorKing telephone entry and access products cover gated communities, apartment buildings and commercial sites, with standalone controllers and centrally managed systems. Their gate operator range is covered on the gate operators page.

What we review before quoting

These are established on site first, because a number produced without them is a guess.

  • How visitors, residents, deliveries and contractors each get in today, and which of those journeys is actually failing.
  • Existing cable between the entry point and wherever calls are answered — this decides whether a retrofit is straightforward or invasive.
  • Whether the entry door also needs access control, since sharing credentials across both is cheaper than running them separately.
  • Network and mobile coverage at the door for any app-based or cloud platform.

Plan the next step

We survey the site, set out the options against what is already installed, and put the recommendation in writing. Offices in Charlotte, North Carolina and Columbia, South Carolina.
