Practice cabling is not office cabling
A clinic looks like an office and behaves nothing like one. The rooms are small and full of equipment, the equipment is expensive and often fixed in place, the corridors are narrow, and the practice cannot close while you work. On top of that, patient data means the network you are building carries obligations an ordinary office network does not.
We do a lot of this work, particularly optometry and dental practices, and the pattern is consistent: the cabling has to land exactly where the equipment lives, and the schedule has to fit the appointment book rather than the other way round.
What we plan around in a practice
Lane and operatory rooms
In optometry, every lane needs data at the right point for the equipment and the chair. In dental, every operatory needs it at the chair and often at the imaging position too. Getting the outlet location wrong means trailing cable across a clinical space forever.
Imaging and diagnostic equipment
Retinal cameras, OCT, intraoral sensors, digital x-ray and ultrasound each have their own connectivity and sometimes their own isolation requirements. We confirm those with the equipment supplier before pulling anything.
Front desk and check-in
Reception carries the most connections of any room in a practice: workstations, card terminals, printers, badge or label printers, phones and often a display.
Patient data on the network
Segmentation, controlled remote access, and equipment kept off the guest network. This is a design decision, and it is much cheaper made now than retrofitted after an audit.
Working around patients
Early mornings, evenings, single-room-at-a-time phasing, dust control and leaving every space clinical at the end of each shift. We plan the sequence with the practice manager, not around them.
Cameras and door access
Reception, waiting areas, corridors and drug or stock storage, with cameras deliberately placed to avoid clinical and treatment areas.
New practice, relocation or refit
On a new build or a relocation the cabling should be designed from the equipment list and the room layout, before walls close. That is the cheapest hour anyone spends on the project. On a refit of an occupied practice it is the reverse problem — the constraint is access and time, and the design has to accommodate what cannot be moved.
Either way you should end up with certified test results, labeled outlets and an as-built drawing, so the next person who touches it is not tracing cable by hand.
